Lift My Eyes to the Mountains

“I lift up my eyes to the mountains.”
Funny how eight little words can be so vivid, so impactful, but this morning, they certainly were! As I began reading the first line of my scripture verses, my entire morning plans changed. They inspired me to slow down my heart, my pace, and caused me to not just read scripture, but to snuggle into God’s word, to take time to lift my eyes to the mountains.
I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
Where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
Psalm 121:1-2 NIV
How many times have I read these words before? Many! However, this morning they jumped off the page, they became an even greater gift because of the timing. The details, the way in which they touched my soul, the way they elevated my heart and helped me see with a broader, more eternal perspective. But still, I am amazed how God knows all of the intimate goings on around us. Not just in this moment, but past what we can see?
Since I was young, the mountains have always spoken a language of hope to me. Part of it is because I first met the Lord on a porch in the mountains. So this verse signifies salvation and a depth of meaning that is limitless in the Lord’s hands. But it goes deeper than that, these verses and those mountains are the symbol of possibilities that even now, at my age, can lift my eyes and soul to the Lord who knows and cares for our entire life….every single detail.
He promises that for you too! The details of your life matter. And His words are the gift that keeps each of us looking up.

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
Where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
Psalm 121:1-2 NIV
So incredible how His words so often taken on fresh, new meaning … (or maybe we finally “get it.”)
True…and in this case you have the added benefit of grasping the words that you read as you see those mountains. Can’t help but make you look up!
