Mist Walking

A few mornings back I woke to find the most beautiful mist covering the landscape out back. It always amazes me to find how often nature mimics what is going on in real life. It is just one more layer of confirmation of how God uses His very own creation to give new understanding and depth to His words. And the timing was perfect, I was in need of a special morning where I could spend time doing a little Mist Walking.

“Kentucky Mornings” are what I call these special dawns that make you want to cherish the moment. We actually live several hundred miles from the southernmost hills of Kentucky, but every now and then one of those dewy dawns makes its way north giving me a teasing wink at what I am missing.

So with coffee in hand, I embraced the gift I was given.
I imagined setting out for a little early morning Mist Walking through that Kentucky dawn, just the Lord and I!

The quiet haze was mesmerizing, the fog appeared to be all around. Yet I was not afraid to step inside the thickness of the fog. I knew my Lord was in the mist, that is why I came. He could be trusted.

I had been in this place before, many times. When I was trying to see things clearly, or even trying to find answers, now I was returning because there was a dilemma in my life. I was looking for the security and freedom I remembered from the past. Now I needed guidance and direction, there were decisions to be made, and steps that needed to be taken. But I have learned, nothing can be settled, no decision can be made until I return to “our place.” As the Lord and I walk in the quiet of this haze, I listen, then I wait for the answers, in anticipation of the mist rising…

“I’ve blotted out your sins; they are gone like the morning mist at noon!
Oh, return to me, for I have paid the price to set you free.”

Isaiah 44:22 tlb

Mist walking is something that occurs throughout life. At least it has in my life. It is a place to go where you know the Lord is present and waiting so that you can walk together. Just like I see the canopy out back of a haze that is quiet and peaceful, this place, where the Lord is waiting, is also quiet and peaceful. It is a place where any of us can find that place of trust and security, where we need a little time and space to get away and to either reflect or to seek guidance before moving on to the next step in life.

Have you ever wrestled with decisions or changes that were about to take place in your life? Sometimes they are solid and concrete decisions, but sometimes they may be hazy, it may be the Lord has not yet put forth the exact step, or plan. Either way, waiting is important. Clarity will not come until that mist rises! Then we can see what He wants us to see.

We can have a sense of peace and even freedom in knowing He is in control. His word can be trusted and so can He. “Oh, return to me, for I have paid the price to set you free.” Isaiah 44:22B Even if your adrenaline is pumping, if you are still unsure, then don’t make a move; one more reason to wait on the Lord. Wait for the mist to rise!

The good news is this then can become a pattern for life, where we can return to the canopy of His counsel over and over again…

“I have swept away your offenses like a cloud, your sins like the morning mist.
Return to me, for I have redeemed you.”

Isaiah 44:22 niv
